Brothers,
Two weeks ago this newsletter was called Four and Oh. Since then the Hokies have lost twice, by a combined seven points, and both games came down to the last snap.
Pitt, on a Friday night at a sold-out Lane Stadium, finished 35 to 33. Tech led 14 to 0, fell behind 35 to 24, and fought back with a safety and a 28-yard touchdown pass from Ethan Grunkemeyer to Davion Brown. The last drive set up a 36-yard field goal as time ran out. It went wide left.
Cal, last Saturday in Berkeley, finished 25 to 20. Tech led 14 to 13 going into the fourth quarter, gave up the lead, and took it back at 20 to 19 on Grunkemeyer's touchdown run with just over a minute to play. Cal answered and scored with 18 seconds left. The Hokies still got to the Cal 7-yard line, and the last pass into the end zone was broken up.
That is 4 and 2, 1 and 2 in the ACC, and two heartbreakers in eight days. There are six games left.
Homecoming: Georgia Tech, Saturday
Georgia Tech comes to Lane Stadium this Saturday, October 17, at 3:30 p.m. on the ACC Network. It is Homecoming, and after the last two weeks the team could use a full house.
Four brothers are on the Game Day board so far: Jay Johnston in Lot 55 at the end of the Drillfield, Jim McAlister in the grass behind Lot 3 space 202, Steve Daves in Lot 2 spaces 188 to 196, and Tom Crump in Lot 1 space 129 with Tony Case and Bruce Clarke.
If you are coming back for Homecoming, add your spot so brothers can find you: https://nuprime.org/events.html#gameday
Names and lots are public. Email is optional and never shown.
After Saturday there are two home games left: Stanford on November 14 and Virginia on November 28.
Name the faces
Two more composites are on the website. Michael Williams (Zeta, 1973) sent in the 1973 and 1974 chapter composites, and they are in the archive now: https://nuprime.org/archive.html
Eight brothers pictured on them are still on our Missing Brothers list:
Reginald T. Kruszewski, Clyde M. Reece, Jr., William F. St John, Brian P. Cosby, Steven P. Earhart, Michael J. Cullen, Charles W. Gill, George R. Swecker
If you were in the house in those years, you sat next to these men for the picture. Where are they now? A name, a town, or a mutual friend is enough to start. Write to [email protected].
From the archive
Paul Wohlleben (charter class, 1971) went through the archive and put names on six photographs we had no names for. He also sent eight more, including a pledge kidnapping from January 1970 and a summer afternoon at the original house in 1971. One of the brothers in Paul's pictures, Don Gurtler (1971), is on the missing list too, so if you know where Don is, tell us.
Steve "Stretch" Armstrong (Omega, 1979) sent seven photographs of his own. The archive now has 49, up from 32 two weeks ago. Thank you to Michael, Paul, and Stretch.
We are still looking for composites from 1972, from 1975 through 1985, from 1989 to 1992, and from any year after 1997. A phone photo of a print is fine. Reply to this email or send it to [email protected].
Missing Brothers
The list is down to 104. Four more brothers have been found since the last issue, and two of them were among the five names we asked about.
Steve Jones (Alpha Upsilon, 1986) came in through his pledge brother John Doyle, who rounded up a few of his classmates in a group message and told them we were looking. John lovingly calls their pledge class Alpha Oopsilon. We will let the class explain that one.
Mike Agee (Beta Alpha, 1988) was sent in twice on the same day, by Ron Kirkpatrick and by Bryan Canary. Glenn Wright (Beta Alpha, 1988) was one of the three we had only a phone number for. Ron Kirkpatrick sent us an email address for him, and then Glenn wrote in himself. And Dan Dunbeck (Sigma, 1977) wrote in on his own with three words: "You found me."
Two are still close. We have phone numbers but no email for Andy Slack (1985) and Troy Brown (1986). Deane Boone takes the blame for that one: he has not texted them yet.
Three from the last issue we would still like to find:
Bryan "Bubba" Davis (Alpha Pi, 1985), Michael J. Hirsch (1985), Galen S. Sampson (Alpha Tau, 1986)
Bubba is in the Nu Prime Raiders Facebook group, so somebody reading this can reach him. We know you're out there, Bubba.
If you know how to reach any of them, a note to [email protected] closes the gap. The full list, by decade: https://nuprime.org/missing-brothers.html
Brother news
Congratulations to Glenn Wright (Beta Alpha, 1988) and his family. Glenn's son was married on Saturday, October 3, in Waynesboro, Virginia.
Close to home
Richmond brothers and Stardusters meet this Thursday, October 15, at West Coast Provisions in Short Pump, starting around 5:00. Rain moved it indoors from the patio at Ruth's Chris, so if you saw the earlier note from Victor Calaman, this is the new spot. Details: https://nuprime.org/events.html#richmond
Hampton Roads brothers lunch the third Wednesday of each month at Forbidden Palace in Virginia Beach; next is October 21.
Pass it on
689 brothers get this newsletter. There are 783 on the roll. If you know a brother who is not receiving it, forward this one and point him to https://nuprime.org/newsletter.html.
See you Saturday. Go Hokies.
